“Is there any researches on rice that can’t make people gain weight?”; “what’s the differences between Thai rice and Chinese rice?”; “What’s your opinion on transgenic?” ……On the afternoon of September 14th, Researcher Xuewei Chen from Rice Research Institute, who published a manuscript in ”cell’, Professor Xianjun Wu, party secretary and vice director of Rice Research Institute, and Researcher Dengcai Liu, director of Wheat Research Institute, together brought an academic feast to students of college of life science in 12-109, where was full of audiences and applause. Xianyin Zeng, Dean of the college presided over the seminar.
Professor Wu took “Why do we study rice?” as topic, introducing the distribution and the importance of rice, Chinese rice and its production status, combined with “ the story of rice and me”, humorously shared the interests and sentiments in his own rice research. Researcher Liu delivered a report entitled “From wild species to wheat varieties”, taking “the key factor in the sustainable development of human civilization is food security” and “the driving factor of human civilization is from wild species to cultivation techniques” as entrances, introducing the importance of the utilization of wild species gene, and explaining how to develop and utilize the excellent genes from inconspicuous weeds by taking the wild Aegilops gene to solve the problem of wheat spike germination as example. Researcher Chen combined with the research direction, illustrating the current status of China rice industry and some knowledge of rice immunization. In sharing his own research experience, He also remarked that the future of Chinese agriculture needs everyone to participate in and fight for and hoped that every student sets an ambitious goal and devotes ourselves to our country industry.
